Kefalonia: Hidden treasure

Thinking about visiting this less popular Greek island? Do it, babe! You will find beauty above and beyond your expectations, I promise:)…

Last year, I had a chance to visit Kefalonia. It wasn’t even on my bucket list but my mum really wanted to go so we did. We stayed in a small hotel in Lixouri. The beach nearby called Xi beach belongs to the national UNESCO heritage because of its unique orange sand and white cliffs. It was probably one of the smallest beaches, I have visited, but it made it even more private and special.

The Nr. 1 must-see on the island is definitely a cave called Melissani lake. This place is connected to the legend of a beautiful nymph who suffered from unrequited love to the god Pan. She committed suicide and threw herself into these waters. There had been some statues found under the water dedicated to her and testifying their tragic love story. It is a very unique cave with a huge crater and crystal clear water.

The Melissani cave is located next to the Sami village (where you can get a nice lunch in one of the sea sight restaurants). Try to arrive to Melissani early in the morning because during the season (June- September)there are many people from all around the world visiting this geological phenomenon. The ticket costs around 10-15 euros. A guide will take you on a 15-minute boat ride through the caverns, telling you all the geological and historical information. You might also hear them singing traditional Greek songs:).

Another place definitely worth visiting is a village of Assos. Lovely colorful houses surrounded by hibiscus trees and turquoise sea. Order an iced coffee and admire the beauty around the bay.

Myrtos beach is considered to be the most beautiful beach of Kefalonia. It’s not easy to get there, you need to rent a car and ride down through a narrow road but it is stunning. However, do not expect to book a hotel or have a lunch in a restaurant. That place is untouched by people and it makes it even better. The small version of blue church on the picture below is at the top of the hill where you can experience the breathtaking views.

The capital Argostoli is a small town with the port. You can get a ferry and visit other places from here too. It only has one Main street with the most unique shops full of handmade products, cafés and couple of churches. What is actually really cool is a chance to see the huge sea turtles in the port. I loved the vibe of this place! We walked around for hours…

Still not sure if you want to visit? Ryanair flies to Kefalonia during the peek season twice a week for reasonable prices:).

You’re welcome, travel addicts!

See you soon!

Lots of Love,
